Darmstadt – Elisabethenstift

With an ordinance by the Grand Duke of March 24, 1857, the Elisabethenstift was founded as a "Milde Stiftung" (pious foundation) with corporation rights under the name "Diakonissenhaus Elisabethenstift". Princess Elisabeth of Hessia, née Elisabeth of Prussia, made the construction of the mother house on the current property possible with a donation.

On saint's day of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, November 19, 1858, the house was inaugurated and began nursing care work. In the period that followed, the deaconesses took over other tasks in community work, geriatric care and education.

Sponsorship for the individual diaconal tasks was gradually transferred into new structures. What remained is the immediate and unalterable task of the Elisabethenstift, to provide care and life-long livelihood for the deaconesses.

The Elisabethenstift is a Foundation of the Church under public law.
