Flensburg – Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenanstalt zu Flensburg

The Evangelical Lutheran Deaconess Institution Flensburg – also referred to as DIAKO – was founded on Michaelmas Day, September 29, 1874. Three deaconesses and five student nurses began their work in Flensburg at that time.

They took over a small hospital which went back to a foundation established by the couple Gotthard and Anna Hansen. Due to the tireless work of the deaconesses, it was possible to constantly expand DIAKO.

The hospital was expanded, a church could be built in 1883, the boarding school and training work began, nurses were trained and sent to the hospitals and communities in the country.

Today, DIAKO provides care for about 41,000 patients every year with outpatient and inpatient services. Almost 600 hospital beds, 465 spaces in nursing care homes, 260 apartments with assisted living services offered and 90 spaces in the day-care center for children are available. In the Flensburg region, DIAKO also plays an important role as a educational institution: about 270 young people are in training for a nursing or medical profession.

The Diaconal Community is an important part of DIAKO. It includes men and women from different life situations and professions, who form a community in faith and ministry. At the moment, the Diaconal Community has 152 members: deaconesses, diaconal sisters and brothers.
