Dresden - Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenanstalt Dresden e.V.

The Deaconess Institution Dresden was founded in 1844 and is therefore one of the oldest Deaconess Houses in Germany. Today, more than 1,300 employees work in the fields of medicine, nursing and geriatric care, professional education, support for disabled and elderly people and in the service sector.

The medical services sector includes the Deaconess Hospital in Dresden and the Emmaus Hospital in Niesky. Both houses are emergency hospitals for basic and regular care. The Deaconess Hospital has special emphasis on working with oncological patients in the cancer organ centers. The institution is also an academic training hospital of the Technical University of Dresden. The "Facharztzentrum am Diako" (center for medical specialists) expands the services for outpatients as a medical service center with dermatologist and urologist offices on the campus of the Deaconess Institution in Dresdner Neustadt in the future also in Niesky. The vocational schools for nursing care workers in Dresden and Niesky offer training for sustainable health care professions.

Geriatric care institutions of the Deaconess Institution Dresden provide support and care for old people under the roof of the non-profit DIAKO Seniorenhilfe GmbH company. The Evangelische Behindertenhilfe Dresden gGmbH offers various qualified services for the support, promotion, education and professional integration of people with disabilities in the Dresden region. Employees of the DIAKO Versorgungs- und Service GmbH (Supply and Service) and the DIAKO Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (Administration) provide health care services that are indispensible for handling everyday operations in the institutions. The guest houses in Dresden and Graal-Müritz, former rest homes for deaconesses, offer relaxing vacation in a familiar atmosphere and also possibilities for group tours.

Since 1866, the Deaconess Institution has also been upholding the tradition of a wafer bakery. It is the only of its kind in central Germany. They produce a million communion wafers each year and supply parishes in Saxony, Thuringia, Berlin and Brandenburg. The Church of the Deaconess House is the heart of the Deaconess Institution and a place where church music traditions are upheld. Special music, corresponding to the liturgical year, is not only performed during the regular religious services, but also on High Holidays.

Since its founding, the Diakonissenanstalt Dresden has been shaped by the Sisterhood of Deaconesses and later also by the Diaconal Sisterhood and Brotherhood and the group of Protestant employees. The three groups merged into the Diaconal Community in 2007. The motto "Living devotion" guides the daily work in all facilities and is orientation and challenge for the employees.
