KGK Press Release 3/2011
A commemorative publication for the 150th anniversary of the Kaiserswerther Generalkonferenz was presented today in Kaiserswerth. Under the title "Diakonie in Community – Perspectives of Successful Motherhouse Diakonie", more than 30 authors from eight countries identify the current position of the association of more than 100 Deaconess Houses, diaconal communities and diaconal organizations based on the Kaiserswerth tradition from Europe, North and South America and Asia. The presentation of the book took place on the premises of the Kaiserswerther Diakonie near Dusseldorf, within the scope of the celebrations for the KGK anniversary with more than 160 people from 13 countries.

"The book describes the models of Diakonie in community that have been shaped by deaconesses and are still lived today in various forms", says Norbert Friedrich, Head of the Fliedner Kulturstiftung, in his introduction. "This includes theological and historical reflections as well as very pragmatic considerations and descriptions."

"Diakonie in Community" is opened by theological-diaconal perspectives on the diaconal community and social enterprises. New impulses are presented for common ways for patients and caregivers as well as for bridge building between the community and service providers. Current reflections about the catch word "Community" are discussed and also questions of the rules and statutes. The section "Fields of work" then presents occupational profiles of the deaconesses and discusses questions of economization, ministry to old people and spirituality. The topic "Interpreted tradition" finally includes experience reports, but also scientific historical observations.

Among the authors are Ottfried July, Bishop of Württemberg and Chairman of the Diaconal Council, Johannes Stockmeier, President of Diakonisches Werk of the EKD, Traugott Jähnichen, Social Ethicist and University Professor from Bochum and the Canadian Deaconess Monica Denk.

The book, published by Norbert Friedrich and Martin Wolff on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Kaiserswerther Generalkonferenz, has 256 pages and was released by Neukirchener Verlag; ISBN 3788725249 or 978-3788725242.
